I am an Associate Professor at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications and a Senior Researcher for the Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship, based in Washington, D.C. Before moving to the IDJC, I worked at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX for 9 years, and I received my Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 2015. My first book, Disrespectful Democracy: The Psychology of Political Incivility, is available from Columbia University Press. I’ve also won several university-wide and professional awards for research and teaching, including the 2020 Craig L. Brians Award for Undergraduate Mentoring and Research from the APSA Political Science Education section and the APSA Political Communication section's dissertation award in 2016. I received my M.A. in Government from the University of Virginia, and a B.A. in Political Communication from the George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs.
